Travelling to the Czech Republic

Airport

The Prague International Airport (PRG) is an air gate to the Czech Republic. The airport provides daily connection from/to major European cities. Other destinations can be reached via the airports in Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam or Paris, where you have to change planes. The airport called Ruzyne is located on the northwest edge of the city. In the Arrival Terminal houses a post office, bank and exchange counters, car rental agencies counters, AVE accommodation agency counter and a restaurant. In the Departure Terminal you will find shops, restaurants, fast food and airline agencies counters. For Airport Information dial +420 220 111 111.

The town centre can be reached by cars, shuttle vans or buses, whose stops are situated in front of the Arrival Terminal:

  • FIX runs cars from the airport to any place in the city. Cars are easily recognized as Volkswagen Passat sedans with a Visa Credit Card ad on the door. The driver will charge you a fixed  price for a ride to the city (from CZK 120 to 770,  according to the city zone). All cars have air conditioning and are fast and comfortable.
  • CEDAZ runs shuttle vans (every 30 minutes from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.) between the airport and the city centre for CZK 90. The ride in a comfortable van takes about 30 minutes. Tickets are available on the board.
  • WELCOME Touristic Praha runs shuttle buses (every 30 minutes from 8.30 a.m. to 7 p.m.) between the airport and the city centre for CZK 95. The ride in a comfortable bus takes about 30 minutes. Tickets are available on the board.
  • CITY Transport Authority runs bus No. 119 (every 10 minutes from 4.30 a.m. to 11.30 p.m.) between the airport and the Dejvicka metro station. The ride takes about 25 minutes and the bus is not comfortable. Do not forget to buy a CZK 12,- ticket from a newsstand or the yellow machine at the bus stop. At the Dejvicka metro station take the metro line A A to the city centre (without having to buy a new ticket, because your ticket is valid for  60 minutes).

Train

It is easy to get to the Czech Republic from all major European cities by train. Remember, in summer the international trains tend to be full and you should book your seat at least a few weeks ahead. Most international trains arrive at Praha Hlavni Nadrazi (the Main Station). Several trains go to Praha Holesovice or to Praha Smichov or to Praha Masarykovo Nadrazi railway stations. All these stations have metro stops and are easily accessible.
The Main Station has the best facilities. There is an exchange office, an accommodation agency, showers, a left-luggage office, day-use lockers and fast food.

Bus

Bus is the cheapest way to travel across Europe. The Czech Republic provides connection from/to major European cities several times a week. Most international buses arrive to Prague to Florenc (the Main Bus Station), where you can find the schedules, fares and some travel agencies. A few buses go to Roztyly. Both stations have metro stops and are easily accessible.

By car

The Czech republic is covered with a network of generally good roads; old routes often go through villages and small towns. There are some 500 km of European-style motorways, the main ones being the D1 or E50/E65 between Prague and Brno. The traffic on motorways and country roads tends to be light. The quickest way of taking your car over to the continent is to drive to the Channel Tunnel. The most direct route from Calais to Prague is via Lille, Brussels, Cologne, Frankfurt and Nuremberg, entering the Czech republic at the Waidhaus - Rozvadov border crossing - a distance of over 1000 km. As in the rest of Continental Europe, you drive on the right-hand side of the road. The legal driving age is 18 years . The speed limit in built-up areas is 50 km/h, on major roads 90 km/h, and on motorways 130 km/h. Children under the age of 12  mustn't sit at the front seat. Drivers from the USA, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand need no international driving permit, only a full domestic license, along with the vehicle registration. You'll also need a certificate of insurance or "green card", normally valid for three months, showing you have full liability insurance. Your car must be equipped with a first-aid kit and a red-and-white warning triangle.
